I just wasn't sure Villa was going to be an attractive enough move for him, but he clearly sees them as a bit of a sleeping giant and he will need to prove himself at a big club in England before he could be considered for the Liverpool job.

That was never going to happen as long as he was stuck up here in the two horse race of the SPFL.

Massive test for him now. Villa fans will be expecting a lot. Can he deliver ?

Martin O'Neill didn't do too bad
Big success?
Martin O'Neill didn't do too bad
Aye, forgot about him. Had a good run at Villa and started off well at Sunderland. Not sure he was a big success at either but you're right, he didn't do too bad at all. However, as with Rodgers he already had a pretty good reputation down south as a manager. It wasn't uncharted waters for him.

Aye Martin O’Neill did very well at Aston Villa

Walter Smith had a decent run at Everton.

Graeme Souness done well after leaving the Huns.

Brendan Rogers has done an excellent job at Leicester City.

Gerrard is nowhere near as good as those names above. He won the league in a fan-less season and has failed in all six attempts to win a cup, despite having by far the second biggest budget in the country.
And lets not forget about Alex Neil... :lookaround:

Think he had villa 5th or 6th 2 years in a row before it went tits up at Sunderland?

I don’t think the huns could turn down the cash. He will be on a decent wage, stepped forward Mcinnes on peanuts, with KT at his side. They stopped the 10, it’s all that mattered to them, they have to start paying it back now one way or another.
Perfect timing for us for the semi. In fact, I’m getting one 🤭🤭🤣🤣

Hopefully him walking away screws them up especially before the semi. He knows there’s no future with a broke ass zombie club!

I wonder if he knows there an impending collapse coming at the Huns, hence him jumping ship now. Aston Villa are historically a big club, but currently the best they can really hope for is somewhere between top 10 and avoiding relegation.

Thick zombie cvnts can't figure out why he'd leave them for villa. Did they not see their financial accounts the other day? Plus villa will probably give him a couple of hundred million to spend. Huns are "bigger" though 🙄

Well they will be expecting better than that otherwise he won't last long there.
I reckon Villa have the potential to be about 5th in the Premiership especially when you look at how clubs like Leicester and this season West Ham have done. If he was to do as well as say Rodgers has done then he would be in the frame for the Liverpool job when Klopp finishes up there.

5th?! The chances of Villa breaking into the established top six of City, Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal & Spurs is very slim. Leicester have been hovering around there for a couple seasons now, West Ham are having a fantastic season so far and look to be building something. So to me getting a top 10 finish would be good going for Aston Villa right now.

I don’t think Villa are aiming to high as a club at the moment, the reason Dean Smith lost his job is because of a poor start at achieving their stated aim of a top half finish. If he can get them consistent top half finishes, similar to the job Moyes has done at West Ham, that will give them a platform to push on to challenging the bigger clubs.

Most clubs in the Premier League, outside the top six or so, are generally looking to avoid being drawn into a relegation battle. Villa fans might expect more but so do the fans of Everton, Leeds, Palace and Wolves. Then there’s Newcastle with their new found wealth.

Overrated as a player and manager Spl Last year was probably the worst ever . Poor celtic, aberdeen , no gunts and we weren’t that great , finished third because of the previous points 🤷‍♂️
