Gordon ,I dont agree politically at all with the tories but to bring politics into this situation is wrong, would any other party knowing what they knew then and not with the hindsight they have now ,have done things any differently. Everybody agrees christmas relaxation was wrong but the govt. didnt say you must go and mingle at christmas common fuckin sense told most of us not to. The virus is spreading and the govt have undoubtedly made mistakes but the govt didnt organise a Jewish wedding with 400 guests, the govt didnt organise baby showers , the govt didnt organise groups of youths walking round at night sharing fags and drink( where are their parents), the govt doesnt organise the house parties that are STILL fuckin going on, the people have to take responsibility for their own actions. Putting people who arrive in the uk into compulsory quarantine should have been done at the start but wait till people start squawking about their human rights now it's being done. When there's the slightest relaxation people swan off abroad on holiday and then moan like fuck when they get back that they weren't given enough warning about having to self isolate when they get home, fuckin idiots. Why go in the middle of a pandemic? It's because of ignorant *&*^ like all of the above that the only time I get out is to take ma dug for a walk and my locals shut and I cannae come up for a game tae see my pals, including your good self. Aye, the govt have made mistakes, big ones, but it's the self entitled arsewholes who think the rules dont apply to them that are spreading it . Rant over. Stay safe everybody.
All available evidence suggests that the vast majority of people are sticking to the rules, and surveys show that the majority of people are supportive of stronger measures to suppress the virus. I'd suggest it's very much in the government's interests for us all to be thinking as you are and blaming each other instead of looking at their failings. The facts just don't support it though.

Why is the current lockdown less stringent than the first one when the virus is currently more transmissible? Ask the government. Why is there still no proper support for people with the virus to isolate, when studies show that only 20% of people with a positive test are isolating? Ask the government, maybe also ask them why they spunked £22 bn on test and trace with their pals when that whole programme is utterly pointless if the isolation part isn't working. Why are borders still essentially open? Ask the government. Why are so many millions of people still having to go to work and spread the virus? Ask the government. Why did we encourage people back in to pubs in August where they could be served by a chancellor who wasn't even wearing a fecking mask? Why did we encourage people to go on their holidays and as a result end up going from having almost eliminated the virus in July, to ending up with 80% of cases being traceable back to Spain by September. Ask the government - all of these things come from people following the rules they put in place. It's the rules that are wrong, not the people.

And most of the above but ,without hindsight would any other party have done things much differently . There are rules and common sense. There's lots of things I could do without breaking the law but common sense tells me not to.

I'm not sure how much common sense helps you if your employer insists you go to work and they're within the rules to do so. I'm not sure common sense puts food on the table if you're supposed to self isolate but would have zero income if you did so. Most people's idea of common sense would lead them to think that if the government is actively bribing them to go to the pub then it's probably safe to do so.

The simple answer is a Corbyn led Labour Party would have.
[automerge]1611760647[/automerge]
A Corbyn led govt.could have nationalised the private sector ,seized private hospitals encouraged overseas staff to come into the NHS,PPE vaccines all of that could have been brought into a NHS system.
All unecassery work on building sites would have been shut down. Our airports and borders would have been shut. The schools would have been shut, the shops would be operating a so many in so many out systems.
We would have a one way system in supermarkets and everyone but everyone in a shop would have to wear a mask. Anyone working in a workplace would have been provided with PPE, proper ventilation in workplaces would have been provided. Anyone working from home would have been on full pay.5G broadband would have been rolled out across the land all schoolkids would have been given a top of the range laptop.
Students could have had their digs paid for for a year. The homeless could have been put into properly supplied hotels or homes, might I suggest Holyrood Palace? New jobs socially distanced, could have been created in the climate change sector including mass solar panel making and wind turbine sites like Bifab could have been saved.
Socially distanced tree planting could have gone on a pace as well as flood defences
.How would all this be paid for? Scrap Trident, raise Corporation Tax and if firms like Vodafone don't want to pay their fair share nationalise them.

Interesting that you've got an insight into what Corbyn would have done. Every govt. in europe , from right to left has fucked up and our govt has made some really bad decisions but would any other govt, of whatever colour , without the aid of hindsight have marched majestically through this crisis without making a mistake. Also you think we should have encouraged overseas health workers to come to the NHS, at the expense of the , probably poorer countries they would come from leaving their own health services woefully short. There are already one way systems and social distancing in shops and supermarkets which some dullards choose to ignore. There are also rules in place for masks which people ignore . The only possible medical reason for not wearing a mask should be a lack of ears. The govt are responsible for a lot that hasn't been done properly, supply of PPE and securing residential homes to name but two, and I also think there should have been a complete lockdown before christmas but they cant be held responsible for those with no common sense

Remember this Boris Johnson speech from last February? We now have the worst death rate in the world and pretty much the worst economic impact too so that Clark Kent schtick went well. But yeah, it'll be about house parties. No one is expecting governments to sail through without making mistakes. I just take slight issue with the whole "sacrificing 100,000 people to avoid economic damage whilst actually sustaining the worst economic damage whilst we're at it" thing.

Supercharged champion indeed. Ffs

And in that context, we are starting to hear some bizarre autarkic rhetoric, when barriers are going up, and when there is a risk that new diseases such as coronavirus will trigger a panic and a desire for market segregation that go beyond what is medically rational to the point of doing real and unnecessary economic damage, then at that moment humanity needs some government somewhere that is willing at least to make the case powerfully for freedom of exchange, some country ready to take off its Clark Kent spectacles and leap into the phone booth and emerge with its cloak flowing as the supercharged champion, of the right of the populations of the earth to buy and sell freely among each other.

And here in Greenwich in the first week of February 2020, I can tell you in all humility that the UK is ready for that role.

Every govt in Europe has fucked up? Norway and Findland's deaths are in their hundreds the UK hundreds of thousands; because they carried out more or less the reforms I suggested, including timely isolation, full pay for anyone going into isolation, rolling test and trace, and no faffing around with PPE. They didn't suggest eat out to help out, not closing their borders, insisting schools stayed open, and forcing poorly paid workers back to work otherwise they would have starved. Australia has something like 900 cases, New Zealand Vietnam, and Taiwan in double figures, and yet you say there was nothing this UK govt. could have done better?

Does Belarus buck the trend? We probably wont ever get accurate news from there, but a country with no covid restrictions and close on double Scotland's population is said to have only 1,688 deaths. Found this an interesting article

Seems mad to me that after over a month of lockdown there is still 28k new cases yesterday. I think the 2nd lockdown is alot less strict than the 1st. I knew alot of friends who were furloughed for the 1st and all still working now. Family who worked from home in the 1st having to go to work and argue they should be allowed to work from home again and most of the office agrees to stay working there.

If the new variant spreads easier than the first it seems like we've wasted alot of time on a lighter version of lockdown.

I quick look and they're currently running at around 1,700 cases a day with a 9 or so million population.

Scotland, by comparison, is running around 1,200 cases a day with a 5 or so million population.

I suspect there's something not being told in that rosy story.

Do you think other factors such as obesity in the west play a part Eastern Europeab countries do not yet quite have that problem

Taking my Mum and Dad (both mid 80s) for their vaccinations tomorrow at their local GPs. Hugely thankful to the NHS for getting them to the point where both are still here to get the jab. What a job they did for both of them last year and in the post hospital care both have received.. My Mum is a bit gutted as its her birthday today so she cant have a wee drink just in case it affects her tomorrow.

spoke to a friend who started training in the forces..I wont say where..just a few weeks ago. loads self isolating. one 16 yr old has had it twice and been there for weeks, another young guy has scarring on lungs so wont get passed for the trade he was taking and another has collapsed lung..that debunks theories that u cant catch ot twice and that is barely affects young fit people
