Ryan Porteous to sign new deal?

The thing that confuses me most is why so many Hibs fans want rid of a young, developing, Hibs supporting, Scotland international to leave the club?

For me he’s still a liability defensively. While certain parts of his game have undoubtedly improved, he doesn’t appear to have worked on his biggest weaknesses. Maybe that will come with experience, maybe it won’t.

I don’t necessarily want rid of him, but if there’s a decent offer on the table I’d take it.

He’s not a Scotland international btw.

Wouldn’t mind if we sold him for the right price. Wasn’t too long ago a lot of people wanted DMac to play in the cup final ahead of him.

DMac sadly isn't the future. And I'd have played him in the final as we're bereft of leadership. That wasn't necessarily a reflection on Porteous.

Porteous was named in the Scotland under-19 squad for the elite round of qualification for the 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.[15][4] He made his first appearance for the under-21 team in the 2018 Toulon Tournament, and made 14 appearances in total over the following two years.

He earned a first senior Scotland call-up for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kazakhstan in November 2019, but did not play in either fixture.

Good enough for me.

By that logic Paul McGinn is also a Scotland international.

The “did not play” line means he’s not capped for Scotland, therefore not a Scotland international. He’s an under 21 international, maybe in the future that will change.

I know but you get my gist, seems we are pretty happy to see a decent young player and Hibs fan leave, its a bit weird for me.

He was on the bench wi a strip on, of course he’s a Scotland international.

The reason I'm ambiguous about him leaving is the fact that Hibs wont see the best of him. ( unless his best is past?)
Another season at ER will see much the same player we've had for the 100 or so games he's played already.

Aye I get where you’re coming from.

I think his best games have been in the centre of a back three, so perhaps we need to sign a proper right sided centre half to play alongside him and Hanlon? It’s either than or cash in and use the money to reshape the defence IMO.

Diny get a cap for sitting the bench unfortunately.

Aye yi do.

Aye yi do.

You absolutely do not. You have to play to get a cap. Ryan Porteous has zero caps for Scotland, as per the SFA’s own website - Ryan Porteous | Scotland | Scottish FA

Ryan's a young lad who has had some bad injuries, asking him to play at the top of his game over the course of a season every game was always going to be a big ask, I'd prefer he stayed with us, give him the captain's armband and let him flourish into next season.

Captains armband!? Based on what?
I've no issue with him staying and playing, but I wouldn't throw the armband at him.

Heard it all year, no leaders in that team. That team included him. I need to see much more from him before talking about making him captain.

Giving him more responsibility isn't what he needs right now. Needs to find consistency more than anything.

Maybe if Porto focused on the basics of defending instead of taking too many risks I can see a genuine argument about keeping him, but he was more doing the latter and if the fee was right then let’s take it.

You certainly don’t get a ‘cap’ if you don’t play. Question is are you considered an international if you are selected for the squad. Google gives no clues 🤣
I’d be claiming it if I was in the squad 👍

Maybe if St Johnstone aren't in his league he'd be a world beater!

I reckon Porto (and Nisbet) have already left Hibs, at least in their own minds.
Both seemed to be affected with bids being knocked back and they are maybe already imagining spending the big bucks.
Hopefully Hibs get a decent wedge for them, but they will be away shortly.

Has it been confirmed yet?

Surprised Millwall haven’t come back in for him.

I see Mallan, our loanee to a Turkish club with an option to buy, has started back with us on pre season training. Doesn't look like he's got much of a tan either!

Pluck sake…

So on the basis that Kristopher Ajer has just gone to Brentford for £13.5m where do you think that prices Porto.

I think it puts his value at way more than the figures that have been quoted so far.

He is younger, is improving and in my opinion isn’t a lot behind Ajer and in my view has the potential to be as good as.

I’d be looking for £5-6 million minimum.

It all depends........

If the Old Bigots were to become interested, then the SMS would soon be headlining "£1 million rated Hibs defender keen to join (insert pox of own choice here)"

His contract is worth less than Ajers, so talent doesn't add up the same.
I think we're still somewhere around 4 and 5million depending on clauses.

Aye gotta factor in. International appearances and appearances in European competition.

In contract talks with us now apparently

Good, should've been at the same time as Nisbet (any news?) And Boyle imo though.

Good time to bolster his confidence and show his value to the club in the light of the shameful and unwarranted criticism by Slippy and the The Hun apologists in the media, as well as retired footballers jumping on the bandwagon.

It doesn't really matter whether his red card was right or wrong (it was wrong) the tirades of abuse and bullying of a young professional was pathetic.

100%, disgusting that the "authorities" allow (condone) the treatment he gets.

We are all Ryan Porteous.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the stickies tried to buy him

Me either. No more hated figure in the Hunco support than Ryan.
Pettiness will make Ryan a target more than his talent will. Which is a shame, because he is really improving this season. Growing into a fantastic player.

Hopefully signs a deal, gets paid well until the summer and goes to some English club next year for a substantial wedge.
Or decides he wants to stick around here forever. Either will do.

5 year deal, aiming to let him go for substantial fee in 2-3.
That would do me.

And Ryan I hope.

He's a top quality player. Hopefully stays with us a few more years. Really like the way the lad plays the game.

100% this, future Captain 💚

Hope he stays at Hibs long enough to become captain..

Definitely captain material.

Ryan is an excellent centre half on his day. Good in the air, can read the game, can pass the ball and has decent pace.

If he can iron out his well known flaws, he is capable of playing at a higher level than Hibs.
