Went to a couple of Eintracht games in Florida on their winter break early in 2019. Tampa Bay Rowdies stadium was used for one of the games which wasn’t up to much and looks similar level to the one used by the Charleston Flappers.

The other game was a mini tournament in downtown Orlando with Ajax and 2 Brazilian teams and the crowd was massive and a packed larger stadium with South American expats taking it very seriously.

Magic ? opportunity to see new places and get tucked into the local scran and bar scenes.

Their stadium isn't actually that bad. Its small, 5100, but

"The club moved to MUSC Health Stadium (previously known as Blackbaud Stadium) in the suburban Daniel Island area in 1999. The first privately funded soccer-specific stadium built in the United States, it seats 5,100 people.[8] MUSC Health Stadium is modeled on lower level English soccer grounds and features an on-site pub called The Three Lions behind the west stand. The stadium site also features a training field and club offices.

In 2016, the new ownership built the second-largest video board in the Southeast. MUSC Health Stadium's jumbotron is 3,000 square feet. When comparing the square footage to stadium seats ratio, the video board is the largest in the world.

Additionally, the complex includes sky boxes, a plaza for corporate entertaining, and state-of-the-art media capabilities, making it one of the premier professional soccer venues in the U.S.
"

Might need to get them to change the name of that pub though.

Don't you think Hibs not taking the offer from FC Groningen to have annual home/away games together was a bad mistake. You and I have been there together on several occasions.

The prospect of potentially having a link up with them was gross stupidity by Petrie and co. I still have the invite on my phone.

There is already a Hibernian FC/FC Groningen tangible link up through supporters over many years.

The logistics and cost for Hibs and Groningen fans undoubtedly would have made a formal tie up with them financially better than this proposition.

Hibs have always been a selling team, over the years,as have been FC Groningen, we all know who we have sold on, FC Groningen have sold on Ronald and Erwin Norman, Argen Robbens and Louis Suarez on their paths to greater things.

No disrespect to Charleston Battery however we would be as well getting a tie up with AFC Wimbledon.

I think they have moved on from that stadium

Spot on, and yet we still could set it up.

Was there at the pre season in Arnhem with a few Groningen guys and someone asked Rod about it and he denied all knowledge!!

One look at the players Groningen have unearthed shows it’s a no brainer and we could learn shitloads from them in relation to both scouting and player development.

Went to Orlandos ground in 2017. Kaka was playing fir them, opposing team, can’t remember who, were down to 10 men quite early, Orlando ran out 5-1 winners. Cracking stadium, game kinda slow paced but their singing section behind the goals was very impressive, inc about 10 drummers. Also, sat with beer in hand in seats and Hibs tops on

Apparently their ground, which seems like an awful lot of aloominum cost $175M

It totally converted me to safe standing.

I honestly can't see the benefit to Hibs. Nothing at all jumps out at me. It's like A top MLS team, linking up with Airdrie.

I think the idea is to pick up development players rather than the finished article.

Having access to a pool of young players who are not exposed to our bevy culture sounds decent.
Try Groningen mate.

I have the reply from Hibs to FC Groningen in full. Something not right there.

Aye, you're right ?

I would say that was a massive opportunity missed, but as I said further up, we could still rescue it. I would add we should look at other clubs where there are live fan links, E. Frankfurt would be one, another might be Everton, where people will be surprised to know many Blues have soft spot for Hibs, more so than Hibs fans having a soft spot for Everton.

Call it the Sunshine on Leith ?

It always bugged me that Hibs never took this up, back in the day.

Robbie Crawford on trial at East Mains? Someone is going to have to explain this to me, because that seems like a waste of everyone’s time

Half and half scarves?

charleston merchandise in the hibs club shop?

Trial my arse.

that’s not an invitation.

I caught an interesting listen at the weekend about development of soccer players in the USA - the thrust of which is that stateside they have the best in the world for mental conditioning, fitness, nutrition and yet; the players still aren't playing at the highest level and reaching their perceived potential.

The conclusion was that USA still lags a long way behind Europe in coaching, and the few American players that have made the higher levels have done so on the back of moving to Europe at a young age and getting better coaching. The participation over there is huge, but I would tend to think that the standard in their domestic leagues isn't as high as you would expect and probably somewhere behind the Scottish Premiership, especially if you take out the token foreign stars.

The killer bit of evidence provided was only 1 American has won the champions league; although when I checked it out that was a stretch - he hadn't even played in the final.

Just on your last point regarding the Champions League - Alphonso Davies just won it with Bayern Munich, and started the match. Admittedly he is Canadian, but began his career at Vancouver Whitecaps who are an MLS team.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the standard of coaching, and the ingrained football culture in Europe is so far ahead of North America. However I do think they generally put way more emphasis on athletic ability at a younger age, certainly more than we do in Scotland.

I coached girls “soccer” about ten years ago. Absolutely spot on about them focusing more on athletic ability rather than skills, ball work, or any of that. The one coach that took the older girls spent most of training doing running, wind sprints and all that pish. I gave the youngsters a quick warm up and straight in to ball work and made it fun too. The lassies won two championships back to back and the older girls struggled to win a game.

This was Under 13s, so not really much to go by, but I did watch them play high school level and practice was all fitness related again. Facilities here are unbelievable compared to most of the UK. There’s no excuse for a country this size to not be churning out top quality players.

It's a fair point about Alphonso - and he moved into Europe at 17. If he had stayed in MLS until 20,21,22 then I think there would be no chance he would be breaking into the Bayern team.

Totally agree on that. If Hibs hope to unearth any genuine talent from over there, players aged over 18-19 probably aren’t worth looking at unless they genuinely have some exceptional talent.

The phrase I heard was that American (broad sweeping generalization) thinking is you play the guy that gives 100% ahead of the guy who gives 70% even if that person brings more to the team because he has more natural ability or aptitude for the role required.

The rational thinking is of course to play the one that brings more to the team.

That pretty much sums it up. Coaches would rather pick a player that always shows up to "practice" over a more skilled player that can't always make it due to other commitments.

From what I saw during my couple of years coaching kids and watching high school games, it was pretty grim. Next to no tactics and very basic. I applied for a coaching position at a highschool, but because I had no degree in academics or sports science, I was immediately ruled out.

For most in America though, in my very limited knowledge, sports is a way to get an easier road to college.
Student athletes, athlete comes second. Phrase from coach Carter that stuck.

If you're preparing them for life, then the hardest working should be rewarded with the spot.

Unless its American football obviously, there's some schools that take in more money through that than full time NFL sides. Texas state is one of the highest grossing American football sides period I think.

This is hilarious…after a chance conversation today, it turns out I know Robbie’s brother. Even more hilariously, I coach a team with his brother and have done for the last two years 😂

I should really have clicked when I seen the laddie wearing Battery tops.

I certainly hope we're trying to sign that young guy who was training with us about a year ago.
Barrajas or something..

17 and playing every week for them an seems tobe a standout for one of the Mexican Youth squads.
