Lots of talk of changing our shape and mostly 1 up front. I do reckon we need to shake things up a bit as we've become predictable. My concern is one up front hasn't really worked for us. Usually find Doidge is a lonely figure with little support. Maybe Heckys way of that system put me off it and can be implemented better by JR.

Might work better with Nisbet up front, Boyle and Murphy supporting from wide, and Newell/Mallan in the No 10 role. Worth a try, possibly against Dundee

One up top can work if you can get runners up quickly from midfield, otherwise it will be a repeat of PH time.

JR seriously needs to consider it because I feel we need an extra body in the middle of the park.

The big problem with one up front is that none of our strikers are capable of playing that role. How many more times does this have to be illustrated ? Every time we have tried this formation with our current personnel it has failed.

We do need to consider adding the extra body to midfield.

I see a 433

Marciano
Mcginn Porteous Hanlon Doig
Gogic
Newell Magennis
Boyle Murphy
Nisbet

Nisbet runs the channels so will give room for Boyle and Murphy to operate inside as well as outside.
Newell has shown willingness to get to the edge of the box, Magennis should've scored last week breaking into the box, so we don't need someone in the hole behind Nisbet.

Newell and Mallan are interchangeable and have completely different qualities.
Magennis I hope is the player advertised, a bit box to box, involved in the midfield action. Waste of time out wide.

Porteous and Doig, need to learn and improve, they will, theyre young and already shown an accomplished head. Porteous is further along his development I want to start seeing the changes now. He needs to not believe his own hype, dont want him getting too big for himself. He deserves the plaudits, keep earning them instead of buying them.

I like Doidge, but he doesn't operate so well like this.

I thought if anyone could it be Doidge. He's strong, can hold up the ball and finds a pass. Always felt the support from midfield was lacking.

We didn't have Magennis and Murphy when we last went for it, we do have a different balance to the squad from then to now.
Imo anyway.

I was against 1 up top back then too.

Apart from Nisbet pretty much agree with what you have. Be interesting if he does try something different versus Dundee.

This does not work in Scottish Football, especially with a big Huddie upfront like Doidge. End of story

If we had the personal to play one up front we would, because that it is how Jack Ross likes to play, he has said so himself. It's a non-starter.

We just need to drop players who are out of form and if we can't do that then there are squad depth issues that need addressed in Jan.

One up front with a target man is not something I’m a fan of - they generally lack the pace and mobility to press from the front. For me the one up front needs to be able to mix it up between coming short to link or running in behind.

The formation also needs genuine support from the wide players and at least one midfielder, but ideally two.

A 433 might work... Nisbet looks like he’d be very good as the lone striker but would need the likes of Boyle and Murphy staying high up the pitch to support. Magennis and Newell making runs from midfield, allowing Gogic to stay back and do what he does best in terms of protecting the back four (let’s be honest he’s pretty limited on the ball).

Celtic do it, Rangers do it, Motherwell do it, Livingston do it but yer right it doesn't work in Scottish football.

Aye they all do it but it still doesn't work lol

We tried one up top with Lennon and with Hecky with not much success. I think it's having the right players to play the formation . Personally I much prefer to see a Hibs team playing a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 system.

Totally agree with that. With it being JRs favourite formation maybe he'd get better out of the players for that system.

I'm against 1 up front also but thought I'd pose the question.

Doidge has done the solo stuff, it doesn't work out for him. Its too easy to lump a ball to a player capable of challenging for it instead of taking the time to build your attack.
Alot of what he does benefits a partner and then he arrives into the box last.
Up on his own he needs to control the ball, then get it to feet and find a pass, the attack is usually done by the time he can recover and get into a position to work with it.
He'd work with a goal scoring number 10 in a 4231, 4411 type formation.
A James McFadden type, who will go beyond him or take shots from outside the box. Won't work with our playmaker types.

Nisbet is the one. He moves so well.

Fair enough. Your looking at it different to me. I like my lone strikers to be a unit and control the ball to bring others into it. Nisbet would be more movement of possibly front 3 of him, Murphy and Boyle which would keep defences guessing.

One of the biggest problems right now is that Boyle has gone AWOL.
The only guessing defences are doing just now is wondering if he's on the pitch.
The difference in the guy is unfathomable.

I do see it, I just don't think that's a Doidge role.
Boyle and Murphy would need to be close to utilise him and thats not getting the best of Boyle. Murphy would benefit maybes.

I think with how deep teams sit against us, knowing that they can't catch Martin, and more mobile and dynamic approach with Nisbet will draw them out. A team sitting deep will have to step forward when any of those 3 drop back to collect and turn into space.
And in a counter, you'd have to fancy us on the front foot against most backlines.... If they don't kick us off the park...

Wasn't long ago that if you suggested 1 up front on here, there'd be a stampede to say 2 up front is the Hibernian way and anything else doesn't work. Playing 2 pacy wide guys and 2 strikers might work against the teams near the bottom of the league but the better teams run over us in midfield. The personnel we have in midfield limits our tactics. If we had some box-to-box goal-scoring midfielders maybe we could go with either formation. But we dinnae.
